Arrest and Investigation
Authorities first responded to a 4:32 p.m. radio call from the 21700 block of Ybarra Road, where a man was allegedly “attempting to light a fire,” according to a Los Angeles Police Department social media post. Local residents reportedly restrained the suspect until officers arrived, who then transported him to the Topanga Division station for questioning.
LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi explained during a Friday morning press conference that while the suspect was initially detained on suspicion of arson, investigators found insufficient evidence to press such charges. Instead, the individual was arrested for a “felony probation violation.”
“This investigation is ongoing,” Choi emphasized. “We are grateful for the community members who brought this situation to our attention.”
Community on Alert
The Kenneth Fire, which rapidly scorched 1,000 acres within hours of its ignition, has left the Woodland Hills and west San Fernando Valley neighborhoods on edge. As of Friday morning, the fire is 35% contained, with evacuation warnings still in place for areas spanning from Vanowen Street to Burbank Boulevard and County Lane Road to E. Valley Circle Boulevard. Though mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted, officials warn that the situation remains volatile due to rugged terrain and high winds.
Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley addressed the public on Thursday evening, highlighting the ongoing challenges. “This fire demonstrates that we are far from being out of this extreme weather event,” she said, referring to the persistent dry conditions and dangerous winds that have fueled wildfires across the region.
A Growing Toll
The Kenneth Fire is part of a devastating series of blazes sweeping Los Angeles County, which have claimed at least 10 lives, according to a Jan. 9 update from the L.A. County Medical Examiner’s office. Officials caution that the full extent of the destruction—and the death toll—may not be known until investigators can safely access the hardest-hit areas.
As crews work tirelessly to control the fire, Cal Fire urges residents to stay vigilant and prepared for rapid changes. “Challenging terrain and persistent winds complicate suppression activity,” a spokesperson said, underscoring the need for public caution.
