The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, asking him to provide a justification within 24 hours on why enforcement action should not be initiated against him. This notice comes in the wake of widespread flight disruptions and hundreds of cancellations across IndiGo’s network over the past week.
According to the notice, these operational failures reflect “significant lapses in planning, oversight, and resource management,” and suggest prima facie non-compliance with regulations governing pilot rest and duty hours. The DGCA has emphasized that such large-scale operational challenges could warrant strict enforcement action if adequate explanations are not provided.
Industry analysts note that this move signals increased regulatory scrutiny of airline operations and underscores the importance of adherence to aviation safety and operational norms. The DGCA’s show-cause notice, reviewed by The Hindu, serves as a formal step before potential enforcement actions are taken.
IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, has faced criticism over recent disruptions, affecting thousands of passengers. The airline’s response to the DGCA notice will determine the next steps in regulatory oversight.
