Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have finally reached a settlement in their divorce after more than eight years of intense legal struggles. Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 61, signed off on their divorce on December 30, 2024, marking the end of a prolonged and highly publicized legal dispute.
Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, issued a statement saying, “More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”
A source close to Jolie mentioned that the actress has made an effort to remain positive and is focused on healing following a difficult period in her life. “She doesn’t speak ill of [Pitt] publicly or privately,” the source added. “She’s been trying hard to be light after a dark time.”
Pitt’s representative declined to comment on the settlement.
The former couple’s divorce saga began in September 2016 when Jolie filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The filing came after an incident on a private plane in which Jolie accused Pitt of being abusive to her and their six children. Pitt was never charged, and Jolie chose not to press charges. Following the filing, neither Jolie nor their children returned to their former home, Château Miraval, a French estate shared by the couple.
In early 2017, the two agreed to resolve their divorce privately and enlisted a private judge to make legal decisions regarding custody and other matters. They also agreed to keep court documents confidential, preserving the privacy of their children.
Over the next few years, the ex-spouses continued to battle over custody arrangements for their six children, with some filings containing harsh accusations. By 2019, the couple was declared legally single, although they continued to clash over financial matters, including their shared estate.
A legal dispute over the ownership of Château Miraval came to a head in 2022 when Pitt sued Jolie for selling her stake in the estate. Jolie countersued, accusing Pitt of attempting to take control of the winery and claiming his actions were part of a “vindictive war” against her. The legal battle over the estate continues to this day.
