Russia Rejects Trump Team’s Peace Proposal for Ukraine

Russia has firmly rejected the peace proposal reportedly being considered by former President Donald Trump’s team to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed his dissatisfaction with the proposal, which suggests suspending hostilities along the front lines and transferring responsibility for the conflict to European forces. The plan also includes a 20-year delay in Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, an idea that Lavrov criticized, emphasizing Russia’s refusal to accept Ukraine’s NATO membership under any circumstances.

Lavrov highlighted that the proposal to postpone Ukraine’s NATO accession for two decades and station British and European peacekeeping forces in the country would not be accepted by Russia. He reiterated that the 2022 invasion of Ukraine was primarily aimed at preventing NATO’s eastward expansion, which Moscow views as an “aggressive absorption.”

In a recent interview, Trump indicated that his peace plan would remain undisclosed to prevent it from being “rendered worthless” if made public. However, Trump assured that he would not abandon Ukraine. Reports suggest that the Trump team is considering deploying European troops in Ukraine while delaying NATO membership for Kyiv. Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, who has been appointed as Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, proposed cutting aid to Kyiv and ramping up military support to force both sides into peace negotiations.

Lavrov warned that any attempt to revive diplomatic relations with Russia would be met with significant resistance, particularly as Russia continues to oppose NATO’s involvement in Ukraine.
