After 14 years without one, the iPad is finally getting an official Calculator app, Apple announced during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on Monday. The announcement drew cheers from attendees and praise across social media, as Apple’s popular tablet, first launched in 2010, has long lacked this essential feature.
Until now, iPad users seeking a calculator have had to rely on web browsers or third-party apps. But with the release of iPadOS 18 this fall, Apple will deliver its own dedicated Calculator app, complete with advanced functionality.
In addition to basic math calculations, the app will support unit conversions—a much-needed tool for professionals, students, and casual users alike. It also introduces an innovative new feature called Math Notes. This feature allows users to write equations or problems by hand using the Apple Pencil. The app will then automatically solve the handwritten problems, offering a seamless and interactive experience. Users can also access scientific calculator functions, such as logarithmic equations, expanding the app’s utility for more complex tasks.
“Why is the new Calculator app for iPad actually sick,” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter). “I guess this is why it took them 14 years.”
The addition of the Calculator app follows Apple’s decision to finally bring the official Weather app to the iPad in 2022. This new release is part of a broader update with iPadOS 18, which promises interface enhancements and other new features aimed at improving the overall user experience.
With the Calculator app and other upgrades on the horizon, Apple continues to refine its flagship tablet, addressing long-standing gaps while introducing innovative new tools that push the iPad further into productivity and creativity.
